You can't buy your way into someone's personal shopper
Agents like Muse don't kill brand building, they kill the ad budget that was standing in for it. You can't buy your way into someone's personal shopper, so being remembered and being easy to buy are the only two levers left.

Everyone's asking whether Meta's Muse is just ChatGPT with a shopping cart. I think that's the wrong question. A chatbot answers anyone who asks. Muse works for one person who already has opinions.
So here's my take, up front. Agents like Muse don't kill brand building. They kill the ad budget that was standing in for it. You can't buy your way into someone's personal shopper, so being remembered and being easy to buy are the only two levers left.
Muse isn't a better chatbot, it's a different customer
Muse does the work instead of just answering, per Meta. People can connect it to Gmail, Google Calendar and Instagram so it draws on what they've saved. It keeps working after the app is closed, and comes back when something changes or it needs approval, CNA reported. It checks in before it buys anything.
That changes who you're selling to. Your next customer may not be a person scrolling a feed. It may be an assistant that already knows their taste, their saved posts and their schedule, and shows up with a shortlist instead of curiosity.
The ad budget can't follow you in
Muse has no sponsored slots. Meta says it carries no ads, and what's taking shape instead is subscriptions plus a small fee paid by merchants when Muse helps someone buy, per Digiday. There's no auction to win your way onto the shortlist.
That's the whole link to your budget. Paid media buys reach, and reach has always been how brands got in front of a buyer. With Muse, the buyer is an agent that never sees your ad. So the money that used to rent attention has to go somewhere the agent actually looks: the product data it reads, the marketplace listings it compares, and the memory it already carries about your brand.
We've already seen what happens when bought attention switches off. After the US tariffs hit in April 2025, Temu pulled back its US ads. Its share of US Google Shopping ad impressions went from 20% to zero in a week, and its paid traffic fell 77%, CNBC reported. By May, daily US users were down 48% from March, per Sensor Tower data cited by Reuters, via USA Today.
Tariffs and higher prices were the trigger, so it isn't a clean test. But it shows how much of that demand was rented.
Recognition is the new shelf placement
Meta hasn't published how Muse ranks products. An independent researcher at Caeliai ran hundreds of catalog searches and found Muse leans on brands it already recognizes. When its catalog went down, it named brands straight from memory. Asked why, Muse described it as a loop where the rich get richer: brands it knows get shown first, which keeps them known.
My wife works in visual merchandising, so I've learned that a shelf is never neutral. Placement, light and eye level all do quiet work. A good personal shopper skips the aisle entirely and walks to the shelves they already trust.
Memory gets built, not bought. Liquid Death hit a record $333 million in sales in 2024, per Fast Company. e.l.f. grew net sales 28% in fiscal 2025, per e.l.f. Both are brands people talk about, and in 2024 they even teamed up on a Corpse Paint makeup collab.
Your product data is your packaging now
Muse can't pick up a box and read it. It reads your listing. Caeliai found Muse pulls candidates from Meta's product catalog, then checks price, stock and the exact variant on the store's own site. The same product even scored differently depending on which store listed it.
SteelSeries shows what tidy product data can do. Its agency, NoGood, reports it became the most retrieved gaming brand in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, with more than 1,500 daily AI visitors by October 2025. That's agency reported, and it's not about Muse, but the lesson travels.
In SEA, Shopee and Lazada listings are where the agent shops
Muse launched in Singapore on October 27, 2026, with Shopee and Lazada among its early partners. People can ask it to research products and compare prices before buying on either, per Meta and CNA. Some connector features are still rolling out.
That matters because marketplaces already are the shelf here. Shopee, TikTok Shop and Lazada made up more than 84% of Southeast Asia's platform GMV in 2024, per Momentum Works. NIVEA Vietnam grew e-commerce revenue 233% in the first half of 2025 by backing one hero product across Shopee and TikTok Shop, its agency reports.
In this region, your marketplace listing isn't a side channel. It's the shelf the agent walks to first.
You can't buy your way into someone's personal shopper. Be remembered, and be easy to buy.
What that shift looks like: Mars
The clearest example I've found isn't on Muse, but it's the same problem. In 2025, Mars Wrigley ran a pilot with Azoma, a firm that optimizes products for AI shopping assistants, across eight brands in the US, UK and Canada, per Azoma.
Here's what they did, in order. First, they measured how often their brands showed up in Amazon's Rufus, Walmart's Sparky and ChatGPT. Then they worked out which questions and content signals shaped those answers. Then they fixed five things: product page titles, bullets and descriptions; product images and alt text; questions and answers on the marketplaces; reviews; and mentions across the open web.
Not one of those five is an ad buy. Azoma reports share of voice in those assistants rose 17.7% on average, and the optimized products grew revenue 43% more than a control group. M&M's share of voice rose 28.6%. That's agency reported, so treat it as a direction, not a guarantee.
This is where I'd move money first. Not into more reach, but into the boring, specific stuff an agent reads before it ever thinks about you.
A quick, honest note. None of the cases above are about Muse, and Meta hasn't published how Muse ranks. This is my read of where it's heading, not a playbook proven on Muse.
